Family Life

Family life has changed greatly since the 1950’s. In those years, every aspect of a family was based upon certain roles performed by the spouses. Today, wives no longer solely cook for the family or take care of the children and husbands are no longer the singular providers for the family. The change in roles creates more confusion, which then increases the levels of necessary involvement and attempts for successful family functioning. Family provides people with important relationships in their life. These relationships assist family members in learning how to relate to others and grow through the ability to communicate. Although a marital relationship begins before any other type of family relationship, this fact does not mean that it is the easiest type to maintain. Gaining and maintaining marital quality involves commitment, communication and certain adjustments for each of the spouses. From an article in the Journal of Marriage and Family, Alexis Walker explores a symposium of research on marriage. Walker collects researchers findings and relays that “…the longitudinal course of marriage reflects processes of interaction, individual strengths and weaknesses, and difficult circumstances” (844). Constant acknowledgements of aspects of the relationship are necessary in order for marital relationships to work and function successfully. Research shows that over time, marriage satisfaction tends to decline (Karney and Bradbury 65). Therefore, it is essential for each spouse to try enhancing the relationship’s quality to prolong the marriage.

Although many people believe that a healthy marriage equals a healthy family life, others claim that when the parents are happily married and remain together, the family and relationships can be dysfunctional. Family relationships refers to the connection (of blood, marriage, adoption, etc.) among various members of a family.

Positive Family relationships considered to be the most important factor for the overall development and well-being of a child.

Healthy family relationships promotes the transmission of good habits from the parents to their children. Our family teaches us specific ways of acting, thinking and feeling. Friends, teachers, playmates, and other associates are comparatively temporary influences.

The family relationships plays an outstanding role in preparing the new generation for life in the community.

Healthy family relationships is of utmost importance for the old people. They can feel more comfortable when there is strong bonding among their children and other members.

Besides family relationships, the other factors that contribute towards socialization and overall development, are educational institution, the peer group, the work group and various socializing media.
